How much of eBay, Amazon, and Etsy's business is abroad?
The three biggest US-based marketplaces all report a large share of business from outside the US. But each one uses a different measure, so the numbers aren't directly comparable.
eBay: about half of GMV comes from outside the US
eBay's gross merchandise volume (GMV), the value of paid transactions on its sites, was about $80 billion in 2025. About 51% of it was generated outside the US. That includes local sales on eBay's non-US sites, not only cross-border trade. In its 2025 annual report, eBay calls cross-border trade “an important source of both revenue and profits.”
Amazon: $161.9 billion from its International segment
Amazon's International segment had $161.9 billion in net sales in 2025, up 13% year over year (10% excluding foreign exchange). That's about 28% of net sales excluding AWS ($161.9 billion of $588.2 billion). These are net sales, including seller services, ads, and subscriptions, not GMV.
Etsy: 1 in 4 dollars from buyers abroad
Etsy marketplace gross merchandise sales (GMS) were $10.5 billion in 2025, excluding Depop. About 26% came from buyers outside the US.
What this means for sellers
Platform totals mix local and cross-border sales across millions of items. They don't show whether your product will sell in the UK or Germany. Before you expand, check demand, margin, and competition for your own product, market by market.
PreSelling checks one product across the US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan, so you can see where it fits before you order.
